Special Education

“Special education refers to a range of services that can be provided in different ways and in different settings.”

A special school is a school catering for students who have special educational needs due to learning difficulties, physical disabilities or behavioural problems. Special schools may be specifically designed, staffed and resourced to provide appropriate special education for children with additional needs.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) was amended in 1997 and is now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The amendments made in IDEA provide children and youth with disabilities access to a higher quality of education-related services, ensuring all students complete access to the most appropriate education within the least restrictive environment.

An Individualized Education Program (commonly referred to an IEP) is a document, mandated by the IDEA, which clearly defines the individual goal and objectives set for a child with a disability. These programs are written documentation of the special education program and academic modifications required to meet the child’s individual needs. IEPs are developed by a team including the child’s teacher(s), parents, and supporting school staff. The main goal these reviews are to ensure that the child is receiving appropriate and adequate services within their least restrictive environment.
